The story behind the Pontus sailing boot
We have a brilliant rubber marine range and we wanted to produce a leather boot which was as high performing as a rubber boot in the harsh changing marine climates. We have had a wonderful response so far, one from no other than French sailor, Jean Le Cam, after many months in his use: “I really love this boot, it has an amazing comfort and look about it.”
A leather sailing boot with technicality at its core
We needed to ensure the boots were fit for purpose as their intended user was more professional than casual. We didn’t want the boots to be seen as an obstacle to the work being undertaken and performed in very harsh environments. For example, the leather and nubuck need to withstand corrosion from salt water. So, we used a waterproof leather and added salt resistant properties to avoid the formation of salt crystals on the surface common to wet leather. Jean Le Cam offered us the incredible opportunity to test the boot on him, and we developed and finalized the product based on his feedback which we are extremely grateful for.
What makes the Pontus leather sailing boot different?
The leather construction gives the boot strength and durability in the wettest of conditions and the membrane lining provides comfort and versatility in a range of temperatures and over long days’ wear, making it a great sailing boot.
The new MICHELIN sole offers security and comfort with non-slip, non-marking properties as well as the flexibility and durability needed in a sailing boot.
New 4-Layer membrane using recycled ocean plastics
The boot is constructed with a 4-layer Sympatex membrane lining, with an outer layer made from recycled ocean plastics. This makes the boot breathable, moisture wicking, quick drying and abrasion resistant.
Michelin soles
We partnered with MICHELIN to produce a new non-marking sole with superior water dispersal and grip properties for various decking surfaces on all sailing vessels.
Surefit hidden elastic
Having Sure-fit hidden elastic for easy foot entry and fit security was one of the key and distinctive features for Jean Le Cam. Jean says: “You can put it on and remove it very easily, what is a big plus. Indeed, it’s really unusual in leather sailing boot to have this quality"
100% waterproof
100% waterproof – every pair is carefully tested. The Pontus, as all our waterproof leather boots are tested to our strict standards. They are flexed to 100,000 cycles immersed in a water tank. The number of cycles and depth of immersion exceeds standards, and at various stages the boots are assessed to see if any water has penetrated between the outer leather and lining, or through the lining onto the foot.
How to clean the sailing boot after use
- We highly recommend using a stiff brush to give the boot a light buff to remove any loose dirt that has stuck.
- Dip a rag into some warm water, wring it out so that it’s just slightly damp then rub the leather all over to remove any stubborn marks. Leave them to air dry.
- Consider treating your boots with conditioner every few months, to prevent any cracks. This will also keep the boot supple, healthy and resistant to water penetration while restoring any unseen damage caused by the elements.
- Store away from direct sunlight in a dry, cool place.
- Our boot bags also provide optimum protection for your boots, especially when you’re travelling and don’t have a cool, dry place to store them. These bags feature a large front zip opening, a top handle for ease of carrying and ventilation netting to ensure your boot is protected from dampness.
