Choosing the right size Le Chameau wellington boot is vital for your comfort and the boot’s longevity. Our boots are handcrafted on precision aluminium lasts to support your foot and leg in all the right places, just as they have been since 1927. This guide will walk you through measuring your feet and calves in a few easy steps, so you can order with confidence. With Le Chameau’s range of sizes and calf fittings, you’ll enjoy a truly personal fit – one that’s snug where it should be yet allows room for movement.
How Should Wellington Boots Fit?
Your Le Chameau Wellington boots should feel secure, but not tight enough to cause discomfort during extended wear. They should also have enough space to accommodate the usual socks or trousers you plan to wear with your boots, ideally allow for a gap of approximately a finger's width.
What Size Wellington Boots Should I Choose?
Le Chameau boots are handcrafted to be true-to-size, so in most cases your standard shoe size should be the correct fit. For more accuracy, or if unsure, follow our expert recommendations below.
Find your perfect fit
Let’s get started: all you need is a measuring tape, a chair, some paper, and a few minutes. We also suggest wearing the usual socks or trousers you plan to wear with your boots, to get the most accurate fit.
How to measure your foot size
- Prepare: Stand on a hard floor with a blank piece of paper taped down under your socked foot. Make sure your heel is against a wall or straight edge on the paper. Stand up straight with equal weight on both feet.
- Trace: Using a pen or pencil, trace around your foot on the paper (or have someone help you). Keep the pen upright and snug to your foot for accuracy. You can also simply mark the tip of your longest toe and the back of your heel on the paper.
- Measure: Using a ruler or measuring tape, measure the distance from the heel mark to the tip of your longest toe on the outline. This number is your foot length. If you have one foot longer than the other, use the larger foot's measurement for your boots.
- Find your size: Use your foot length measurement to find your size on our Le Chameau size chart. (If your measurement falls between sizes or you are in doubt, we recommend choosing the larger size. A little extra room can be filled with thicker socks or an insole, whereas boots that are too tight would be uncomfortable.)

How to measure your calf circumference
Knowing your calf measurement will help you select a boot that’s comfortable around your leg. We offer styles in different calf widths (narrow, regular, and wide) to accommodate measurements from 34 cm up to 42 cm in women’s boots, and 39 cm to 52 cm in men’s.
Follow these simple steps to measure your calf circumference:
- Wear your usual layers: Make sure you’re wearing the socks, trousers, or leggings you’d normally tuck into your wellingtons.
- Sit and position your leg: Sit on a chair with your foot flat on the floor and your knee bent at a 90° angle.
- Find the widest point: Using a tape measure, wrap it around the widest part of your calf. Measure snugly but not too tight – the tape should be against your clothing but not squeezing you. Measure each calf and use the larger measurement if there is a difference, this number is your calf circumference.
- Add a little extra (if needed): If you plan to wear multiple layers in cold weather, or you just want a bit of breathing room, you can add about 2 cm to your measured circumference.
- Find your calf fit: Now, compare your calf measurement to our boot’s calf size options. If you’re between calf sizes or very close to the upper limit, we suggest choosing the next size up or a style with a different circumference. Don’t force a tight fit – rubber will not stretch much, and a boot that’s too snug could be uncomfortable.
Additional Tips and Reassurance
Adjustable Styles: Several Le Chameau boots feature an adjustable waterproof gusset or a zip that not only makes them easy to put on and take off, but also allows minor tweaks to the fit. If you’re near the upper end of a calf size, an adjustable gusset (like on our Vierzonord) gives you a bit of extra room when you need it. You can tighten or loosen the strap to fine-tune the grip on your calf.
Try Them On at Home: When you receive your Le Chameau boots, try them on in the afternoon (your feet will expand slightly through the day) with the socks and pants you intend to use. Walk around indoors on a clean surface. The boots should feel secure but not restrictive. There’s no right or wrong – it’s about your comfort and preference.
Linings and Socks: Le Chameau offers linings in jersey, neoprene, and leather, but these do not affect the shoe size or calf fit – choose your size normally regardless of lining.
Between Size Exchanges: If despite measuring you find your boots aren’t the ideal fit, don’t worry – we offer free and easy exchanges. It’s important to us that you get the perfect fit for your comfort. Simply follow our exchange process, and adjust to the correct size or model.
Embracing your perfect fit
With the right measurements in hand, you can select your Le Chameau boots knowing they’ll fit like a glove (or should we say, like a boot!). A well-fitted boot will feel supportive through the foot (snug around the instep and ankle so it doesn’t slip off, yet not pinching), and secure around your calf without cutting off circulation. You should be able to slide a finger down inside the boot at the top of your calf – a sign of a bit of breathing room. Our boots are designed to be comfortable from the first wear, with no extensive “breaking in” period required.
By taking a few moments to measure and choose carefully, you’ll ensure many years of enjoyable use from your Le Chameau wellingtons – whether you’re working outdoors, walking the dog, or simply splashing through puddles. Feel free to contact us if you have any remaining questions about fit. We’ve been crafting boots since 1927, and we’re dedicated to helping you find your perfect pair.
