The Neoprene Lined Wellington Boot Care Guide

Our men and women’s Neoprene lined Wellington boots are perfect for the muddy countryside of the wet season with anti-fatigue dual-density soles. They’re extremely comfortable on feet with warm 3mm Neoprene lining and excellent shank reinforcement for arches. You are no better served with our durable, Neoprene boots.

But, what can you do to get the best life out of them?

It often seems that pristine, new boots no matter where you go eventually become battered, mud-crusted shadows of their former selves over time. However, what a lot of people don’t often realise is that with a little more love and care, you can add years of life onto your wellington boots.

How to Clean Your Neoprene Lined Wellies

While it’s always good to clean your boots, a few pointers here and there can really make all the difference. Below are a list of instructions to give you more shine and joy out of your trusty Neoprene lined boots for more time than you thought possible.

Hose them down

It’s a simple trick, but it gets the job done. Give your boots a quick rinse with the hose to get off the wet mud coating lacquered on from that long mud-filled journey, then use a brush to remove mud and dirt that may be entrapped in the zip or soles.

How to dry your boots out properly before cleaning

Neoprene lined boots should ideally be air-dried, although one trusty trick to soak up excess water is to use crumpled up newspapers and to wrap around and stuff them inside the boots to draw out moisture.

Never try to dry boots using radiators, fireplaces or direct sunlight as they will cause the rubber to crack prematurely. Direct sunlight overexposure will also cause wellies to fade over time.

How to scrub the boots without damaging the rubber

Use a brush to take off any excess mud and dirt. Don’t forget about any zips, as dirt and pebbles may find their way in there during your walk. Our boot care kit boasts a natural hair boot brush that is very thorough at removing soil and debris.

Then, mix non-ecological soap and pure water together in a bowl, and use a care sponge to clean your Neoprene lined wellingtons, taking extra care to polish away stains and stubborn dirt which have begun to build up over time.

Remember to get beneath the buckles while scrubbing!

How Often Should You Clean Neoprene Lined Wellies?

It’s important to clean your boots after each time you’ve worn them, especially after a long muddy walk or wet day in the rain. This is because any dirt and mud that you’ve picked up will be much easier to clean off while it's still moist and have much less impact on the quality of the boot the quicker it’s wiped and scrubbed off.

If you don’t clean your Neoprene lined boots, the mud will dry, creating a layer of dirt. As time goes on, that layer will become more deep rooted in the rubber as more grainy layers are subsequently caked on top and also dry, reinforcing it on the surface and spoiling the product’s suppleness and shine.

How to Buff and Shine Your Neoprene Lined Wellington Boots

When it comes to maintaining that unique Le Chameau shine and glow, you need to buff and shine your boots. Not only does the process keep your Neoprene lined boots looking fantastic, but it also prolongs the product life by nourishing the rubber.
Here’s what you need to do below.

Spray

First things first, use silicone rubber spray to lubricate the Neoprene lined boot. Hold the spray can about 30 cm away from the exterior rubber and spray comprehensively to cover the surface. This will nurture and lubricate the rubber blend, get rid of that powder-like bloom that makes you look like you’ve stepped in flour, and prevent premature cracking. It also provides an additional protective coating to further safeguard against water, mud and trail debris.

Wipe and shine

After spraying the Neoprene lined wellies, use a cloth to buff the spray into the rubber surface to revive that Le Chameau shine. Wipe methodically and make sure to cover the entire area to get the best results.

Our boot care kit includes a microfibre cloth that’s perfect for buffing and maintaining rubber flexibility, making your Neoprene lined wellington boots look as good as new in no time.

Storing Your Neoprene Lined Wellies

You should store your boots in a cool, well-ventilated place inside, away from the sun or damp.

While leaving them by the fireplace or on a radiator makes a cosy image and seems like a way to hastily dry them out, it can actually be counterproductive and shorten product life. Rubber, especially our handcrafted rubber, is a fantastic material for Wellington boots due to robust durability, shock absorption and waterproof qualities, but when rubber is overexposed to heat it becomes prone to contracting, cracking and splitting over time.

Our boot bags are great storage for our Neoprene boots, keeping your boots cool and away from the damp wherever you are.

Putting on and Remove Neoprene Lined Boots the Right Way

It’s important that you take off your Neoprene lined boots the right way, just like all wellington boots.

While it might feel tempting after a long, muddy walk to kick or stamp them off with your feet, repeatedly doing this can cause stress and damage to the rubber exterior, especially the heel. You should treat your boots with care and take them off properly by hand.

If you find your boots especially muddy and difficult to take off at times by hand, one great method is to use a boot jack. This can make the process quicker and less awkward, as well as relieve tension on your back due to the new, better positioning and angle it gives you.

Follow all of the above, and your Neoprene lined boots will remain a reliable, pristine companion for years and years to come.
