It's hard to deny that pulling on the layers and heading outside into the cold can sometimes seem like a challenge. Even with the best of intentions, and a list of New Year's resolutions, it's tempting to stay inside in hibernation mode waiting for warmer weather but in fact, one of the best things you can do in this often gloomy time of year is get outside for a breath of fresh air.

Grab a friend, family member or a furry friend. Walking can be a great way of clearing your head but it's also even more fun with company. When chatting with a friend or playing fetch with your dog, you're less likely to feel the physical effort of walking or notice the cold.
Take your camera. This time of year can be incredibly beautiful with ice-tipped foliage, frozen ponds and skeletal trees. Just make sure you head out early enough before it gets dark!
Go on a scavenger hunt. This is a great activity to do with kids as well as adults. Either keep it simple with kids and look out for a bird's feather, a pine cone or an animal's footprint, or plan a more elaborate treasure hunt with a prize at the end.
Build a bonfire to toast marshmallows. Ok, so this won't necessarily have you walking miles, but is the perfect excuse to grab your boots, gather up some twigs and branches and huddle around a fire. Remember to stay at a safe distance away from the house or any bushes.
