Plants that flourish on a balcony

Find a suitable container to use. I've had this old copper pan for years and never used it for cooking as it was far too heavy! Drainage is essential - I've drilled some holes in the bottom.

Fill the bottom of the container with a 1cm - 2cm deep layer of grit to add further drainage.

Fill the container with compost mixed either with vermiculite or grit, as the plants I'm using like a sharply drained compost.

I'm planting the container with succulents - a mix of sedum and house leeks - really great architectural plants that are drought tolerant so can take a bit of neglect.

Plant up the container so that there is space between the individual plants to grow. In this case I am using 4 plants. Make sure the succulents aren't planted too deeply, as this will result in rotting around the 'neck' of the plants.

Dress the top of the pot with decorative stones or slate, and then find a suitable balcony or outdoor table top for it to live. You can keep this kind of planting inside for short periods of time too.
