Step inside a unique country clothing store that prides itself on its family's heritage stemming all the way back to 1845.

Occupying a key position in the centre of Hereford, Philip Morris & Son features on the ever-diminishing list of family-run retailers. Family is central to the business, which opened in 1845 and remained in the Philip Morris family for 100 years before being bought by the Jones family three generations ago and in who’s hands it firmly remains. John Jones, the current owner of the business stresses the importance of family and acknowledges that the excellent reputation of the business in the local community is primarily down to customers knowing, liking and trusting the shop and the family.“3rd generation members of the family visibly leading the business is avital part of giving customers the confidence in our service, “he says.

Today, Philip Morris & Son is a modern incarnation of the original business, describing itself as “part very traditional retailer, part modern e-commerce business that moves with the times”. Jones is proud of the businesses’ ability to quickly adopt new technology and routes to market, but always with the Philip Morris culture, staying true to their family values and brand identity. Customer service and product knowledge have always been at the heart of the business, and whether in store or online this ethos remains a core element in anything they do. Today Philip Morris & Son employs approximately 50 people, about half of whom are on the shop floor. The rest are split between teams for Customer Service, Marketing, Finance and Warehousing. Jones prides himself on the excellent relationship he has with his staff and their average length of service; several have retired in recent years after over 40 years with the business, and the gun room manager has already clocked up 36 years.

A keen Le Chameau fan at home as well as at work, Jones has three pairs. “I think I’ve had the leather-lined Chasseur for nearly 10 years and they are still going strong “he proudly tells us. “They are easily the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned (and I grew up on a farm so I’ve owned a fair few)!”His wife and children are also Le Chameau fans.
